LIVE AT HANGAR 30

LIVE AT HANGAR 30

During this time between touring, I’ve missed playing live music with friends. I’ve been working on new music and even released a few songs that include strings. They have always been one of my favorite sounds to play with live, so I decided it would be fun to play some newly recorded songs with a string section. There is an old airfield relic in the middle of Seattle where I live called Hangar 30. It’s an airport hangar from the 1940s and it’s been left completely unchanged, except it’s now surrounded by a beautiful park. It’s a bit dystopian. There are 2 songs that I haven’t yet recorded that are part of this short, live set. In fact, this is the first time I’m releasing a new song live before creating a version in the studio. I have no idea what they’ll sound like once I get them in the studio, and maybe this process will help inform that sound; maybe not. 'I Was Stone' is a song that has a ton of space, and I wanted that space to allow myself to think as I said the words. It’s a simple melody and the chording is lamenting and patient for most of the song, but as it climbs it gains more hope. I love the idea of having hope while looking backwards in your life and soaking in what was, instead of only looking forward. The other unreleased song ‘Wake' is named after that beautifully chaotic water behind a boat. It’s complete randomness and the only predictable thing about it is that you caused it with your action. If you’ve ever fallen off a boat it feels violent and disorienting, but then there’s peace and reflection. That’s how it feels when a relationship dismantles.
