SYML is the solo venture of artist Brian Fennell. With over one billion lifetime streams, SYML—Welsh for “simple”—makes music that taps into the instincts that drive us to places of sanctuary, whether that be a place or a person. Born and raised in Seattle, Fennell studied piano and became a self-taught producer, programmer, and guitarist. Says Fennell, “Somewhere inside of me is a desert. These places are uninhabitable for most living things, but those who survive are badass. Oblivion is that survivor. I found this guitar strumming pattern while finding myself in a spaghetti western. As the storyline of Oblivion progressed, sweeping string melodies emerged, inspired by Morricone, but also with 808s. The bare moments are dusty and stark, while the big moments are ambitious and almost an assault.” Fennell says about James McAlister's remix of the song: "I feel lucky and excited every time I get to work with James, who has been a part of the SYML sound for several years now. He has played many instruments on Symmetry, The Bird, and WDWGILY to name a few. James is a true musician who shows great care towards the music he creates, and his growing discography is wild. When I first approached him about remixing Oblivion, neither of us had an idea of what direction it should go in. After a week or so he sent what he’d done and I freaked out. It reminds me of Massive Attack or UNKLE, especially the ways both influenced pop songs in the 90's. Watch out for the bass guitar (Gabe Noel) in chorus 2."
